Keeping an eye on the San Diego Padres pitchers

Jake Peavy: Jake looked strong in his second start of the season. Not overpoweringly dominant but he only gave up one run in 7 innings, 5 hits, one IBB but only 3 strikeouts on 103 pitches. There’s been talk of Jake trying to pitch to contact and not strike everyone out and so far it looks like that’s what he’s doing. I’m a little skeptical of that approach. It’s been said that the pitcher exercises very little control over what happens when the ball is put in play so to me it makes more sense to try to get the strikeouts since that’s an out without a ball in play. I understand the argument that it takes more pitches to do that but I’m still skeptical. If a guy is good at striking out batters, why steer him away from that?

Cla Meredith: Another strong inning from The Claw. So far he’s showing that last year was not a fluke, his sidearm sinker is just really difficult to deal with for both right handers and lefties.

Trevor Hoffman: Trevor looked good n the 9th. Unfortunately the Padres couldn’t strike in the bottom of the inning, leading to extra innings.

Scott Linebrink: Scott looked a little amped up when he came in, he overthrew a couple of splitters, bouncing them well in front of the plate. He quickly settled down for another 1-2-3 inning.

Linebrink gets the W as the Padres get another walk-off win. The Padres bullpen is already clearly superior to everyone else in the division. The Giants and Rockies don’t look like they’ll be any threat this year with the garbage they’re throwing out there.

Ah, I think Jake is good at getting the early strikes. It’s the finishing touch that he’s missing last season. So far, so good. Perhaps, he’ll let his natural ability to take over instead of trying to ’steer’ his pitches.
