Matt and Mark were chirping a little about some questionable strike calls tonight. Let’s see what Gameday says:
Red = Pitches called a strike
White = Pitches called a ball

Jake obviously threw a lot more strikes than Schmidt and had his share of generous calls so Padre fans can’t really gripe too much. But take a look at Schmidt’s chart: two wide strikes on either side of the zone. Those are the disputed strikes to Greene and Gonzalez. They’re actually more on the plate than many of Jake’s strikes. I think the reason they seemed so bad is that Schmidt hadn’t hit those locations yet so the umpire hadn’t established that as the strike zone.
The other thing that jumps out is how Jake’s pitches are all over the place. His pitches had a lot of movement and the pitch chart reflects that. Some of those pitches are right down the middle but Dodger hitters just couldn’t pull the trigger.

Wow, that is a very wide zone for both pitchers. Great stuff as always…
