Keeping an eye on the San Diego Padres pitchers

David Wells: The Padres needed Wells to go deep into the game tonight after yesterday’s marathon and Boomer did the job. He gave up two runs over 7 innings, and both of those were in questionable circumstances. He had good command of both his fastball and his curve, retiring 16 in a row at one point.

Kevin Cameron: It looks like one of Kevin Towers Rule 5 picks is finally panning out. Cameron was impressive again tonight. He works very quickly and throws strikes.

Trevor Hoffman: A no-save situation for Trevor, always a dicey proposition but as always, off speed kills.

Scott Linebrink: Nice to get a 1-2-3 inning out of Scott after his struggles last year.

Cla Meredith: More dominance from The Cla. Right handed hitters in particular just look sick against this guy.

Mike Thompson: This is why you need to win these games in the 9th when you have a chance. You don’t want the 12th man in the bullpen out there with the game on the line. Thompson battled but he just isn’t the kind of pitcher that’s going to shut down the opposition. He coughed up 3 runs and the game.

I’m really worried about Mike Cameron. I know he’s a streaky hitter and prone to slumps but I’ve never seen him this bad defensively. He misplayed another ball tonight, leading to the first run of the game. Then in the 9th inning when the Padres had runners on 1st and 3rd with two out Cameron struck out. It takes a special kind of suck to lose games at the field and at the plate.

Thanks, Anthony. Good stuff from Wells.
I wonder if you can analyze Mike Thompson.
I know he doesn’t have the best stuff/control in the world but I thought his fastballs have some movements on them.
Is he just not throwing them consistently? Why is that?

David Wells doesn’t have the best stuff either and yet, here he is still starting and pitched well last night.

I guess I’m just wondering if Thompson can improve his control if his stuff is really not that good. Does he even throw a changeup? Perhaps a knuckleball would be a good one to learn.

Good question. How does one pitcher with mediocre stuff do well while another pitcher struggles? Maybe that’s something we can learn from the Gameday data. Unfortunately the data from last night’s game is all over the place, I think they had problems with the system.

Cameron impresses me more and more each time out. I’ve given KT a lot of grief over the years for playing Rule V Roulette, but I think he may have found himself a keeper here.
