Keeping an eye on the San Diego Padres pitchers

Game notes: Dbacks at Petco

The game wasn’t televised and there’s no enhanced Gameday data so no real insights here.

Jake Peavy: Jake was lights out to start the game, allowing only 3 baserunners in the first 4 innings. He suddenly became very hittable in the 5th, speculation amongst the commenters at Ducksnorts was that he was tired or amped up from running the bases after his first career triple. Jake had an alternate explanation:

“I just didn’t make a whole lot of good pitches,” Peavy said. “I think I mentally relaxed a little bit with a 7-0 lead. I felt good, and I just kind of let my guard down. It was different.”

Jake is a very competitive guy who seems to feed off emotion, I can see where he would lose his edge with a 7 run lead. Hopefully he’ll learn from this and guard against it in the future.

Heath Bell: Bell came on in relief of Peavy with one out and the bases loaded. A run scored due to catcher’s interference on Bowen but Bell shut the Snakes down for another impressive performance.

Justin Hampson: Mike Thompson was sent down to AAA Portland and Hampson promoted in time for the game and he took up right where Thompson left off last night, giving up two hits and a run, forcing Black to bring in The Claw.

Cla Meredith: 9 pitches, 3 outs. Yawn.

Aaron Rakers: 1 inning, 1 hit in his Padre debut. I hear he throws a forkball, I’m looking forward to seeing it.

Do you s’pose this picture is what his “forkball” grip really looks like?

Looks like a knuckle curve to me. We’ll have to watch for both pitches.
