David Wells: Not a good outing for Boomer. He had trouble with his command and when that happens he can be very hittable. He still managed to keep it from getting totally out of hand, 5 IP, 8 H, 5 ER, 2 BB and 3 K. After pitching so well last game and not getting decision it’s nice to see the team pick him up on an off night and get him the W.
Heath Bell: Looked very sharp, 2 IP, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 K. Heath Bell was on XX 1090 radio this morning and seems like a pretty funny guy. He revealed that he wasn’t good enough to play on his high school varsity team and his coach told him he would never be any good. He went to Santa Ana Community College, did well there but was undrafted. After the Mets were unable to sign any draft picks they called and offered a contract because they only had 14 guys on their rookie league team. He then spent 8 years in the Met organization and was very happy to be traded to the Padres. He claimed that the Mets are biased toward promoting the high draft picks. He also said they’re biased towards Latin players but Scott and Billy Ray wisely didn’t pursue that angle.
Doug Brocail: Came on in the 8th for mop up duty. He looked ok, 1 IP, 1 K. If Doug Brocail is the last guy in your bullpen you’re in great shape.
Kevin Cameron: Probably K Cam’s worst outing. He got a couple of outs but left the bases loaded. Fortunately the Padres have Trevor Hoffman to fall back on.
Trevor Hoffman: Trevor’s last appearance was the 18th but he showed no signs of rust, throwing two pitches to get the final out on a grounder to first.

In all fairness, aren’t all organizations biased towards their high draft picks?

[…] shouldn’t have needed the help, but Gonzalez made a rare error to keep the inning alive. As Anthony notes, Hoffman is one heckuva fallback option. Also, he threw only two pitches, so no harm done. Padres […]

To some extent they are but I would hope they are biased towards on-field performance and development rather than where a guy was drafted.

I have no idea. All the pictures came with the template. I’ll be swapping them out for Padre pictures soon.

You’re right on that, should be focused on on-field performance. Unfortunately they tend to follow their investments and give them more opportunities for success.
