Once again the Padres and Petco team up to help get a lousy visiting pitcher on track, wasting another good outing from Peavy.
Jake Peavy: 7 IP, 5 H, 10 K and 2 BB, 1 HBP. Jake had a real bonehead moment in the 4th. He hit Ryan Church with a pitch and inexplicably went to a full windup, allowing Church to take second uncontested. It was pretty funny until Austin Kearns smacked a single to left, scoring Church with what turned out to be the winning run.
Heath Bell: I love watching this guy pitch. He comes in and blows smoke with a violent delivery where he throws over the top of a stiff front leg. I’m not well versed in biomechanics but it just looks harsh. Gameday had him around 99mph for his fastball, then he drops in a nasty slider and the hitters are pretty much helpless. The Padres have 4 guys that could legitimately close for other teams: Trevor, Linebrink, Meredith and Bell.
Royce Ring: Nice job by Ring in his Padres debut. He throws from a very low three quarters/high sidearm angle, higher than Cla Meredith but funky enough to give lefties fits. He seems to be the kind of guy that’s always going to have control problems, he throws a big sweeping curve that starts behind the batters’ back and finished low and away. At worst he should be a nice LOOGY but I could also envision him developing into a lefty version of Cla Meredith.
