Chris Young: Well he gave up 5 runs but I don’t think he pitched all that badly. Terrmel Sledge badly misplayed a bases loaded deep fly ball off the bat of Pujols. Only one run scored, same as if Sledge had caught the ball, but the failure to get the out was what really hurt, eventually leading to all 5 runs scoring. Incidentally, when Pujols hit the ball he immediately went into his dig me” act, watching his alleged grand slam home run. Sorry Albert, you hit that one off the end of the bat and there’s no cheap home runs at Petco. Put your head down and run the bases you pompous jerk.
No graphs today but I did notice that CY threw fastballs almost exclusively the first time through the order. He did mix in some sliders but not many. The next time through the order he started mixing his pitches more. I’d criticize any other pitcher for doing this but CY has shown he can be successful with nothing but fastballs. My only concern is that the word gets out and teams know they can sit on the fastball.
Black let Young come out to start the 6th and even though I’ve been critical of Black in the past for letting pitchers go too long if they’re due up to bat the next inning I think it was the right decision here. CY had settled down and had been fairly effective. Plus the Padres were down by 5 and pretty much had no shot of winning.
Justin Hampson: Hampson came on in the 6th and did a great job getting out of a 1 out, bases loaded jam. Hampson has been a nice surprise in limited duty thus far.
Doug Brocail: The garbage man came on in the 9th to finish the game. I think Brocail has been reliable enough to use in higher leverage situations but hey, somebody had to finish the game.
