More fun with balls and strikes

Over at the Inside the Book Blog, Tango points to a very nice analysis of 5 Greg Maddux starts, focusing on how he pitches to left and right handed hitters and whether umpires give him the outside call.

In the comments Tango wonders whether there is a calibration issue with Gameday and left handed batters and if umpires set up differently depending on the handedness of the batter. Good question and something I’ll start tracking.

One of the great things about this data is that thinking fans are asking questions like this, rather than just bitching about the calls.

Amen! This data is not only fun … but I think it will improve the game.
