Keeping an eye on the San Diego Padres pitchers

Game notes: Cubs at Petco

David Wells: Boomer’s second strong outing in a row. 8 days off between starts may have had something to do with it, or perhaps he’s feeling pressure to stay in the rotation. Whatever the cause, the result was 7 IP, 1 ER. David walked two, both in the 7th when he seemed like he was falling apart. He said after the game that he had “know idea” what he was doing out there but got it together long enough to induce a bases loaded double play to end the inning.

Bud Black has been burned by leaving starters in too long this year and by rights he should have been burned here but Wells wriggled off the hook with that DP. Still, 6 strong innings is all you need from your 5th starter.

Scott Linebrink: A little shaky, a walk, a hit and a strikeout in one IP but no runs.

Trevor Hoffman: Trevor gave up a triple but that’s no big deal for the all time saves leader. Another save, another Padres win.
