Keeping an eye on the San Diego Padres pitchers

Game notes: Padres at Washington 6/1

Jake Peavy: No TV and no Enhanced Gameday mean yet another game without much to say. Most pitchers would be happy with 3 ER in 7 IP but that’s a bad outing for Jake. Ted Leitner mentioned that Peavy threw very few sliders, relying instead on fastballs and change ups. To me that’s a red flag for an injury, possibly an elbow problem.

Following the game on Gameday it felt a lot like last year’s Peavy. 10 hits in 7 innings isn’t the Peavy we’ve seen this year. Hopefully it was just an off night and Jake can bounce back.

Heath Bell: 2 scoreless innings, seems like another good outing.

Cla Meredith: Cla gave up 3 singles in the 10th, giving up the winning run on a Ronnie Belliard infield single. You can’t blame the loss entirely on The Claw however. The Padre offense should be jumping all over a staff like the Nats, especially outside of Petco. Once you get into extra innings on the road the odds are against you, even with a good bullpen.

Had that ball been hit harder by Belliard, that was a DP by Giles.

You are right, though, that the offense shouldn’t have been so offensive. Runners at the corners in the top of 10th with 1 out and no score. That was a recap of the opportunities lost in the game by the hitters.
