The Padres made some interesting moves over the last couple of days. First they signed 2006 draft and follow Matt Latos. From all accounts this kid has fantastic stuff and would have gone late in the 1st round.
Then the Padres announced that former #1 pick Matt Bush is going to give up on shortstop and focus on pitching. Bush was throwing in the mid-90s in high school so that makes two big time power arms addded to the system and the draft is still a week away.
Clay Hensley was activated from the 15 day DL today and immediately optioned to Portland. Lil Clay probably wasn’t happy to hear that but it’s really the only way to solve the roster crunch. Germano won’t make it through waivers if sent down, Cameron is a Rule 5 guy so he needs to stay on the roster and Hampson is the only lefty in the bullpen. Besides, Clay was getting smacked around in his rehab starts and could probably use a few more outings to get his act together.
The Padres also picked up OF Hiram Bocachica who was waived by Oakland. It looks like Bocachica will fit right in with the Padres, he went 0 for 4 in his debut.

It would be really interesting to compare an outing like this to an outing like Jake’s last one against the Brewers and look for some quantifiable differences. I guess that’ll have to wait for the next time Jake struggles in a park with enhanced gameday.
