Wells throws a perfect game through 6 innings, but all three outs in the sixth come on robbed home runs. Black fails to see this as a warning sign and sends Boomer out for the seventh, where he promptly gives up 6 runs.
In the bottom of the seventh, led by key hits from Ensberg, Mackowiak, and Hairston, and a walk by Barrett, the Padres tie the score. Blum comes up with the bases loaded and strikes out on a wild pitch, so everyone is safe. The writers at the game immediately start composing poems extolling the clutchness of Blum. The Padres score two more runs to go up 9-6.
In the top of the eighth, Thatcher comes in and sets down the side in order, with a strikeout. The Padres go down in order in the bottom of the inning, so it’s Trevor time. However, Trevor is still taking his shower, forgetting Linebrink wasn’t around to take a ton of extra time blowing the 3 run lead. Bell comes in instead and strikes out the side on 8 pitches.
