What is this blog about: Watching the Padres. Specifically, I’ll be watching all the Padre pitchers throughout the year and attempting to spot trends, injuries and the like.
Why? The normally dominant Jake Peavy had an off year in 2006 and I read a lot of comments that his peripheral stats were good so it must have been bad luck. I don’t like the word luck, I think it’s used a lot to explain things that aren’t being measured in the stats. I resolved to pay more attention to each pitcher in order to figure out what’s happening.
How? There’s no shortage of statistics and sabermetric analysis out there. I intend to focus on observation more than statistics. If I can spot a change in release point or mechanics that may help explain a change in results that the numbers might miss.
