Mr. Rogers always said each of us is unique and special but thanks to Josh Kalk and his terrific article on using Pitch f/x data to generate similarity scores, we can see that some players are more unique than others.
Specifically, Kevin Cameron’s use of the cut fastball makes him the most unique pitcher in baseball. […]

Justin Germano: Not a bad outing at all for Germano, 6 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, but more importantly 4 K and 1 BB. Germano’s strikeout rate is slowly creeping up to an acceptable level. he did give up a home run but overall pitched well.
Cla Meredith: Another nice outing for The Claw. […]

Series recap: Red Sox at Petco

Yeah, I know I’m slacking. The biggest series of the year and not only am I late, I have all three games in one post. I’ll try to make this quick so I can get caught up.
Game 1
Greg Maddux: The Professor pitched a great game considering the opposition. He really deserved a […]

I didn’t see much of the game and for some reason there’s no Enhanced Gameday data so I’m just going to make some general observations here.
David Wells: Actually pitched better than I thought but there was still no reason to let him come out for the 7th. When Boomer goes past 5 or 6 […]

Jake Peavy: This game reminded me why I don’t like American League baseball. 12-6 is just not a good outcome for a baseball game, no matter who wins. Nevertheless, a win is a win so we’ll take it. Jake pitched very well, much better than his line would indicate and his line […]

David Wells: This is starting to sound like a broken record. 5 good innings, too bad he pitched a 6th. Two homer runs in the 6th, including Ahole Sorriano’s showboating tape measure job.
Cla Meredith: I didn’t see Cla’s appearance but at least he didn’t give up a home run.
Kevin Cameron: […]

Justin Germano: Germano didn’t have his usual pinpoint control and, predictably, he paid the price. 4 ER in 5 IP and once again Bud Black left a pitcher in after it was obvious he was cooked because he was due up in the bottom of the inning. I don’t understand the reluctance to […]

Jake Peavy: Jake didn’t have his best stuff tonight, it seemed like he had trouble locating his slider and it didn’t have the usual bite. He had trouble with his slider in his last start as well, I mentioned in the Game Notes that I suspect arm problems and tonight did nothing to dispel […]

David Wells: Boomer pitched well in a game that really shouldn’t have been played at all. There was a steady rain throughout the game but the umpires were determined to get the game in to avoid scheduling problems. The field was a mess and the players had a hard time holding onto the […]

Jake Peavy: No TV and no Enhanced Gameday mean yet another game without much to say. Most pitchers would be happy with 3 ER in 7 IP but that’s a bad outing for Jake. Ted Leitner mentioned that Peavy threw very few sliders, relying instead on fastballs and change ups. To […]
