Game notes: Padres at Rockies

April 22nd, 2007 · No Comments

Greg Maddux: You normally wouldn’t call 7 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 1 BB and 4 Ks a great outing but Maddux did a great job keeping it close in Coors. Even when the Rockies scored he never let it get out of hand. 97 pitches is a lot for Maddux these days […]

Game notes: Dbacks at Petco

April 19th, 2007 · 3 Comments

The game wasn’t televised and there’s no enhanced Gameday data so no real insights here.
Jake Peavy: Jake was lights out to start the game, allowing only 3 baserunners in the first 4 innings. He suddenly became very hittable in the 5th, speculation amongst the commenters at Ducksnorts was that he was tired or amped […]

Game notes: DBacks at Petco

David Wells: The Padres needed Wells to go deep into the game tonight after yesterday’s marathon and Boomer did the job. He gave up two runs over 7 innings, and both of those were in questionable circumstances. He had good command of both his fastball and his curve, retiring 16 in a row […]

Game notes: Padres at Cubs

April 17th, 2007 · No Comments

Greg Maddux: Started off strong with the usual good movement and location but the Cubs caught up to him in the 5th and Bud Black opted to go with Cla Meredith to start the 6th. 3 runs in 5 innings should have been enough for the W given the bullpen performance and number of […]

Game notes: Padres at Dodgers

April 14th, 2007 · No Comments

Jake Peavy: Another strong outing for Jake. Pretty much the only negative was he was little inefficient at times but you can’t argue with the results. One slight concern: Jake threw 100 pitches and had only 5 missed swings. Of course 22 called strikes will help make up for that.
Doug Brocail: […]

4/11 Game notes: Giants at Petco

April 11th, 2007 · No Comments

Greg Maddux: Maddux was brilliant tonight. Incredible movement on his fastball, locating perfectly, freezing guys for called third strikes. He’s going to have a great year pitching in Petco.
Cla Meredith: Sick. A 1 pitch grounder to Klesko, a 3 pitch K to Molina who waved at a frisbee 3 feet out of […]

4/9 - Meredith vs Bonds

April 11th, 2007 · No Comments

Not much to see here, it’s an easy one to break down. The green dots are the strike zone (Gameday data gives a value for the top and bottom of each hitter’s zone), the red dots are Cla’s release point and the circles are where the pitch crossed the plate. Unfortunately I forgot […]

Release point graph 4-9-07

April 10th, 2007 · 4 Comments

Inspired by this article at Baseball Analysts I’ve started digging through the XML data in the MLB.com Gameday archives. What you’re looking at here is a graph of the release points of the three Padre pitchers last night, Chris Young, Cla Meredith and Trevor Hoffman:
A few surprises here, at least to me. Despite […]

4/9 Game notes: Giants at Petco

April 9th, 2007 · 1 Comment

Chris Young: Young looked even sharper than in his debut. He truly has no-hit potential every time he takes the mound. He looks like he’s growing more confident in his curve (he threw some real nasty ones) but his command of that pitch is still inconsistent. 7 very strong innings for the Princeton […]

4/8 Game notes: Rockies at Petco

April 8th, 2007 · 1 Comment

Jake Peavy: Jake looked strong in his second start of the season. Not overpoweringly dominant but he only gave up one run in 7 innings, 5 hits, one IBB but only 3 strikeouts on 103 pitches. There’s been talk of Jake trying to pitch to contact and not strike everyone out and so […]
