Game notes: Cubs at Petco

Jake Peavy: Jake had a rough time in the first, giving up a run but more importantly throwing 30 pitches. The high pitch count limited Jake to 6 innings. I like that Bud Black took Peavy out after 98 pitches, it would have been real easy to leave him in for another inning […]

Jake Peavy vs. Bronson Arroyo

May 16th, 2007 · 2 Comments

Jake wasn’t his usual dominant self but he was still effective. You might want to refer back to the charts from his last start and compare them to tonight, there are some interesting differences.
Strike chart
Green = Swinging Strike
Blue = Called Strike

Jake had 8 swinging strikes tonight, 12 last week. No surprise, the Reds […]

Game notes: Cardinals at Petco

Jake Peavy Jake continued his strong start with yet another 10 strikeout performance. A lot of us felt that last year Jake was just not able to finish off hitters, he couldn’t get that swing and miss with two strikes. I’ve speculated before that his lingering injuries affected his movement, especially on his […]

Series notes: Padres at Marlins

May 7th, 2007 · 3 Comments

What an odd series. Odd start times, no HD feed, no Matt and Mud, no crowds at the park. The whole series seemed like some kind of minor league affair. Only 15,310 fans were in attendance Sunday afternoon when Jake Peavy shut down the Marlins and the crowd looked even smaller on […]

Jake Peavy strike chart

April 30th, 2007 · 5 Comments

In order to see how Jake gets his strikes I decided to graph only called strikes or swinging strikes, no called balls or fouled balls.
Blue Circle = Called Strike Fastball
Blue Triangle = Called Strike Breaking Ball
Orange Circle= Swinging Strike Fastball
Orange Triangle = Swinging Strike Breaking Ball

There’s a lot of interesting stuff here. The first […]

Game Notes: Nationals at Padres

April 30th, 2007 · No Comments

Once again the Padres and Petco team up to help get a lousy visiting pitcher on track, wasting another good outing from Peavy.
Jake Peavy: 7 IP, 5 H, 10 K and 2 BB, 1 HBP. Jake had a real bonehead moment in the 4th. He hit Ryan Church with a pitch and inexplicably […]

Game Notes: Padres at Diamondbacks

April 25th, 2007 · No Comments

Jake Peavy: Wow. Jake is back to 2004/2005 form. 7 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 16 K. 9 strikeouts in a row. His slider was moving all over the place. Guys were swinging at balls they thought were strikes but LaForest was catching them two feet off […]

Game notes: Dbacks at Petco

The game wasn’t televised and there’s no enhanced Gameday data so no real insights here.
Jake Peavy: Jake was lights out to start the game, allowing only 3 baserunners in the first 4 innings. He suddenly became very hittable in the 5th, speculation amongst the commenters at Ducksnorts was that he was tired or amped […]

Who got the calls?

April 14th, 2007 · 1 Comment

Matt and Mark were chirping a little about some questionable strike calls tonight. Let’s see what Gameday says:
Red = Pitches called a strike
White = Pitches called a ball

Jake obviously threw a lot more strikes than Schmidt and had his share of generous calls so Padre fans can’t really gripe too much. But take […]

Game notes: Padres at Dodgers

Jake Peavy: Another strong outing for Jake. Pretty much the only negative was he was little inefficient at times but you can’t argue with the results. One slight concern: Jake threw 100 pitches and had only 5 missed swings. Of course 22 called strikes will help make up for that.
Doug Brocail: […]
